WHY MALE INFERTILITY IS ON THE RISE; DR ABAYOMI AJAYI EXPLAINS

Spread the love

Nordica Boss, Dr Abayomi Ajayi explains why infertility is on the rise. According to him, “Infertility has always been a serious matter even in biblical times. We remember someone who says give me a child, or I die. So infertility has always been a serious problem, whether 5 years, 10 years, it’s the same. It’s the people who feel it who know it. And the magnitude of the problem, I don’t think it has change in the last 10 years. The number of people or the proportion of people who have infertility has always been with us in the last 35 years, about one in 4-5 couple. So I don’t think the magnitude has change, maybe the composition might be changing. For instance, we know that the male factor infertility is on the rise, that we know, because we can deduce from other places where statistics are well kept. We can also say that the treatment of infertility is better now, and therefore people now have confidence in coming forward for treatment.
You know when you look at a man and a woman, a woman is emotional, the man is logical. But the day, the man sees the reason to do whatever, you will now know that he knows how to do it more than women
The same thing with even medical treatments, if a man is still not sucked in, he does not believe what is been done, he wont come. But when he now sees that this thing makes sense, he will come.
The causes of male infertility have not change. Infection is one thing we still look at. But in other part of the world which I think Nigeria is also not an exception, people are looking at environmental factors now. You know, before, when we started talking about male infertility, many people where saying it’s genetic, that is the way some people are just born. They were looking inside. But now, people are beginning to see that, the way this thing is going, it seems as if it’s an external thing which we need to look at. Of course, the one that might be internal, which is still external is your lifestyle. There is no doubt now that people are turning so much finger to lifestyle factors and environmental factor as a cause of the scourge of the male infertility
One of the reasons why it’s on the rise has to do with lifestyle and the environment that we now live in, talking about global warming and industrialization. All the places people were living before has been converted to shops and all kinds of things. Petrol station here and there and there is lead in petrol, many of us are adding weight and the more you add weight, the more the sperm count also reduces. Diet also plays another major role. Those are the things we need to pay attention to, to prevent male infertility
