Spread the love

Makida Moka came into limelight in 2009, when she emerged the Face of Sleek, at the maiden edition of the competition. This caused a major twist in her modelling career ever since, as her profile has been on the rise. She has paraded most of the runway both locally and international. She is one of the top models to reckon with in the country.
Makida will be handing over her crown to the new queen in the next couple of weeks as her tenure is gradually coming to an end. BOLA AKINBOADE met with her recently and she opened up on how being the Face of Sleek has changed her life.

Bola Akinboade(B.A): How has it been since you won the face of Sleek in 2009?
Makida Moka(Makida): It’s been amazing. It’s been really fantastic. I have met people that if not for these competition, I won’t have met them. And that has really shaped my life in a different way. It’s been really good because I have been to a lot of places and greater opportunities are opening up for me.

B.A: What will you say Face of Sleek has changed about you? How has it affected your life?
Makida: I wear more makeup now. I think I dress better now as well. And I have been able to manage my time more. Because prior to this, I’m always the last person in the house to finish up. On Sunday mornings, you hear me screaming wait for me! But now, I can manage my time more because when you have to be at 2 or 3 places on the same day, you have to wake early, get out and manage your time properly to be able to touch all those places. So it’s really helped in a lot of ways. Now I dress better, wear more makeup, my hair is good and I manage my time more.

B.A: So what was life like for you before the Face of Sleek?
Makida: It was a bit boring. Like I just finished secondary school and waiting to get into the University. So I just thought, while waiting for my admission, let me do different things, that at the end, would know that have actually gotten some experiences and seen the world in a different light before embarking on my university experience.
That has happened and it’s been really good.

B.A: So why and how did you get into the competition?
Makida: I was listening to radio one day and the advert came on. And it sounded like something really good and since I wasn’t doing anything at that time; I decided to enter into the competition. My cousin, who also heard the advert on the radio, actually pushed me to do it and gave me money to buy the form. So I got into the competition and we are here today.

B.A: As at the time you entered the competition, you were young. What was your parents reaction? Were they not afraid the competition might change you?
They were all supportive; especially my mum, grand mum. My grand mum used to call me Sleeky. Apart from one of my uncle, who wondered if that was what I should be doing? He was of the opinion that I’m supposed to be in school and not doing anything outside of school. Apart from him, everybody really supported and had my back. And it’s really good when you have people around you supporting you, because whatever happens, whether it goes wrong or right, they will still be behind you.

B.A: You’ve been the Face of Sleek for two years, how far did you go?
Makida: I actually didn’t think it was going to be this big. Even after I won, I wasn’t so sure what was happening, until I saw newspaper articles and people asking for interviews. And I was like okay; this is not a small thing anymore. It’s been amazing.
I did a show at London Fashion Week; I’ve also done lots of shows here in Nigeria, photo shoots and also been to lots of events. People take my picture and they don’t ask for my name anymore because I have become like a household name. So it’s been really good. I can say I’m quite recognized now. And its not because I’m trying to be big, I’m just happy that has happened for me. And I’m really grateful to God, because it hasn’t been a bad experience.

B.A: You will soon be handing over your crown in the next couple of weeks to the new queen. What next for you after the Face of Sleek?
Makida: I have taken a two years gap here and I will soon be going into the university now. This is how I actually wanted it to be; have a break and then go into the university and become focused. So yes, I’ m going into the university at the end of October, which is before the finale. But I will come for the finale.

B.A:Which of the University?
Makida: It’s the North America University at Republic of Benin. And I’m going to study Mass Communication because; I want to be a TV presenter.
