On Friday, 29 April 2011, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge married Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey, London. The wedding ceremony began at 11:00 am BST (UTC+1). William, who is second in the line of succession to Queen Elizabeth II, first met Middleton in 2001, while both were students at the University of St Andrews. Their engagement, which began on 20 October 2010, was announced on 16 November 2010.
The build up to the wedding and the occasion itself attracted much media attention, with the service broadcast live around the world, and with it being compared and contrasted in many ways to the last high profile British royal wedding in the United Kingdom, the 1981 marriage of William's parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. It was watched by a global television audience of over 2 billion Much of the attention focused on Middleton's status as a commoner (i.e. not of royal blood or a part of the aristocracy) and such marrying into royalty. Hours before the service, William was granted the titles of the Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus by the Queen. Upon her marriage, Middleton therefore became Her Royal Highness Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus, but is not styled as 'Princess Catherine'.
As William was not the immediate heir to the throne, the wedding was not a full state occasion, with many details left to the couple themselves to decide, such as much of the the guest list of about 1,900. It was, however, a public holiday in Britain and featured many ceremonial aspects, including use of the state carriages and roles for the Foot Guards and Household Cavalry. It was attended by most of the Royal Family, as well as many foreign royals, diplomats, and the couple's chosen personal guests.
Middleton wore a white dress with a 270-centimetre (110 in) train, by English designer Sarah Burton, as well as a tiara lent to her by the Queen. William wore the uniform of his honorary rank of Colonel of the Regiment for the Irish Guards. William's best man was his brother, Prince Harry, while the bride's sister, Pippa, acted as her maid of honour. The Dean of Westminster officiated most of the service, with the Archbishop of Canterbury conducting the marriage ceremony itself and the Bishop of London giving the sermon. A reading was also given by the bride's brother, James. After the ceremony, the newly married couple travelled in procession to Buckingham Palace for the traditional appearance on the balcony and a fly past before crowds assembled in The Mall.
Following the wedding, the couple intend to continue residing on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales, where Prince William is based as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot.

Rev. Ray Okocha is now the new face of Christ Embassy and for some inexplicable reasons, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome seems to be taking a back seat, allowing Okocha to oversee the running of the church. Okocha is the Secretary General and a member of the Central Executive Council(CEC) of Believer’s Love World aka Christ Embassy Church founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, one of the fastest growing churches in the country today .
He also operates as the regional Pastor of the Church in the Northern Nigeria and is in charge of the Abuja branch, which happens to be the 2nd biggest arm of the church apart from the Lagos mother church. Though based in Lagos because of his closeness to Pastor Chris, he travels to the Northern part of the country often to oversee the activities of the branches over there.
He is one of the key players in the church and has contributed to the enormous growth of the ministry. He has been described as the engine room of the church, and the spokesperson for the ministry. He holds a strategic position in the church. Apart from been in charge of media and publicity of the church, he anchors the Healing School and when there is a major event, he is always among the teachers in the ministry. Another thing he does is that he opens all the church major events and activities. He announces most of the ministry announcement and outlined activity calendar for the year.
And recently, Pastor Chris has been positioning couple of his Pastors into the forefront while he operates more from the background except when it is necessary for him to be out there. One of the pastors he has groomed for this new leadership role is Rev. Ray. He has been described as one of Pastor’s Chris favorites and right hand man. He is also loved by a lot of members and youth in the church. He is always going out with Pastor Chris to every event and ministration. He is one of the pastors that announces Pastor’s Chris miraculous works at any of his crusade. And these days when Pastor Chris is not available to officiate at invited programmes and wedding, he represents him at such places.
And even though he has been doing great and mighty works in the ministry in the last couple of years, he suddenly came into limelight couple of months ago when he also began to handle the TV series which was solely anchored by Pastor’s Chris before now. The first thing that will strike anyone about him is his great resemblance with Pastor Chris. He is tall, light skinned and handsome. He also wears the same curly hair with Pastor Chris and he is a power dresser too. And with his glamorous looks and oratorical prowess, he has captured a lot of viewers too.
When it comes to ministering the word, he is also very sound. He is one minister who relishes miracles, preaches material prosperity and commands a lot of respect among the youths. He is also well traveled and a world renowned pastor as he is one of the most sought after Christ Embassy Pastors, both locally and internationally as guest speaker at Christian summits, crusades and luncheons. He has a passion for youth empowerment and motivational activities and has handled a lot of Youth Empowerment project for the church which has continued to put him in the limelight.
He does not only preach prosperity as he is also a living advertisement of what he preaches, he is one of the richest pastors in the Christ Embassy Church. He is happily married to Pastor Linda, who is also a pastor in the ministry.
The rate at which Naija Babes are desperate to get a Blackberry phone is very alarming and they go at any length in their quest to get this luxury phone.
Now, if you come across a girl and you try to ask her out or ask to date her, the next thing she will ask is if you can buy her a Blackberry Phone. It’s now the in-thing among babes. Gone are the days when things like Lace Wig, Clothes and perfumes used to freak girls. Blackberry Phones are what they now go for. And it does not only stop at just buying the Blackberry phone, the guys also have to maintain the monthly subscription for Blackberry services. Some of them who already have one and probably lesser models still go ahead to disturb these men to buy the latest versions of these phones in the market. The phone is now like a passport to starting any relationship between men and these ladies and they don’t even want to know whether the men from whom they demand phones actually have one or not.
Blackberry phones, for those ladies have actually gone beyond a mere communication gadget, instead, it’s now a status symbol. If you are meeting a girl for the first time and she already has a Blackberry phone, the next thing she is asking you is your Blackberry pin is so that you can be in constant touch.
These days, girls even use the kind of phones the guys use as a yardstick to size them up.
The Blackberry craze is even splitting existing relationships that are even altar bound. Some girls have even told their boyfriends to back off just because they couldn’t afford to buy them a Blackberry phone. While those who don’t split up with their boyfriends cheat on them with the other men who promise to buy them this phone. It has caused serious damages to those even in serious relationships.
Obviously the introduction of Blackberry phones into Nigerian Market is right on target. It came in a period when most people have no time to sit on their desktop or move their laptop around. With your BB, you can effectively communicate on any platform without risking the carriage of heavy gadgets. Aside this, it has also encouraged Internet usage amongst many Nigerians, thus you can check emails and surf the internet easily. It also makes it easy to communicate with a large group of people at once. But Naija babes have taken it to another level, with their mad rush for the phones.
Do you know a lot of women no longer enjoy sex? While many women are dying to have sex, there are some who do not enjoy sex at all. This may come as a surprise, but this compelling revelation is interestingly true. Studies have revealed that up to 70% of couples have a problem with sex at some time in their relationships. Most women will have sex that doesn't feel good at some point in their lives .This doesn't necessarily mean you have a sexual problem. Most women don't enjoy sex because they were sexually abused in childhood, or raped in adulthood. For others, it’s because they stick to a partner who doesn’t bother to nurture them mentally, emotionally or physically. There are those who have been mis-orientated by society that it is disgusting, dirty and immoral for a woman to have sex, and that women really are all asexual. While to others, it could also be a medical explanation. Some women suffer from what is called ‘Female Sexual Arousal Disorder’ (FSAD) which leads to Lack of Sex Drive (lack of libido). Fortunately, for many women this lack of libido is only temporary. Some will get over it by themselves, and a lot more can be helped by expert medical or psychosexual advice. In this report, BOLA AKINBOADE brings to you why some women don’t enjoy sex plus what they do to enhance their libido.
Hereditary factor is responsible for some women inability to enjoy sex. Essential hormones such as estrogen are in a short form in their body or may not be there at all. Testosterone, although supposed to be a male hormone which is responsible for several drives in a man including the sex drive is also found in women and it also controls their sexual responses. But in some women, it is practically absent. Physically, some ladies have very tiny almost non-existent clitoris. Other sex organs in the body are equally not well developed. Even where some of the above mentioned things are present the lady may suffer from a severe absence of lubrication which makes sex not only painful, uncomfortable but also unenjoyable.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION FROM CHILDHOOD
Most women grew up to view sex with disdain, fear and apprehension. Their mind is therefore not conditioned to enjoy the sex. Most women have been pressured by society into believing that it is disgusting, dirty, and immoral for a woman to have sex, and that women really are all asexual. So many horrible things go through their mind believing that they are doing what is sinful. Even when they are married, they still view sex as something dirty that they cannot even talk about openly.
WOMEN’S REFUSAL TO LEARN ABOUT SEX
The biggest mistake that some women make that make them not to enjoy sex is their refusal to learn about sex. They assume that all a woman is supposed to do is to lie on their back and spread their legs while the man penetrates them and do everything. They do not know how to give pleasure to their men nor do they know what to do to give themselves pleasure. They do not read books and magazines on sex education. They do not watch sex education films. Neither do they experiment to find out things for themselves. In fact, sexual illiteracy exists and women who are sexually illiterate are quite many.
Some women don’t enjoy sex because they experience pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse or vaginal penetration which may be caused by different conditions. These conditions include: Vaginal Infection, Vaginal Irritation, Vaginal Dryness, Vaginal Tightness, Pain of the Clitoris, Pelvic Pain, Pelvic Adhesions (often the result of previous pelvic surgery or PID), Endometriosis, Ovarian Cysts, and Uterine Fibroid Tumors. These conditions leads to pain during sex or orgasm, which interferes with her desire for intercourse.
Female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD) occurs when a woman is continually unable to attain or maintain arousal and lubrication during intercourse, is unable to reach orgasm, or has no desire for sexual intercourse. Women describe it as being "unable to get turned on," or being continually disinterested in sex. It is also called "frigidity." There are numerous causes of this disorder. They include: physical problems, such as endometriosis, cystitis, or vaginitis systemic problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or hypothyroidism.Even pregnancy or the postpartum period (time after delivery of a child) may affect desire. Menopause is also known to reduce sexual desire.
Medications including oral contraceptives, antidepressants, antihypertensive, and tranquilizers surgery, such as mastectomy or hysterectomy which may affect how a woman feels about her sexual self. The symptom includes; a woman may have no desire for sex, or may not be able to maintain arousal, or may be unable to reach orgasm. She may also have pain during sex or orgasm, which interferes with her desire for intercourse.
Stress is another that affects women sex drive. The desire for sex changes over time and can be reduced by situations ranging from medical issues to tiredness and emotional distress. Stress also can directly affect a woman's libido. According to medical experts, while men often use sex to relieve stress, women are more likely to experience negative stress effects on their libidos/sex drive. The brain is the most important aspect of a libido and when other thoughts are filling a woman's head, stress from the unresolved thoughts interferes with sexual drive. Unresolved issues surrounding money or work will interfere with a woman's libido when she can't stop thinking about them. Thoughts and worries about sick family members, her own health or her partner's well-being can cause stress that interrupts any sexual desire. The physical effects of stress show up in the form of overtaxed adrenal glands, the overburdened glands rob the body of the estrogen and especially the testosterone that is needed to maintain a strong libido. Chronic stress eventually leads to adrenal fatigue and there is little or no adrenalin left to prepare women for sexual encounters.
SEXUALLY ABUSED OR RAPED
Most women don't enjoy sex because they were sexually abused in childhood, or raped in adulthood. The effects of child sexual abuse include depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, propensity to further victimization in adulthood, and physical injury to the child, among other problems.
Depressed people usually feel withdrawn. So many people who are depressed tend to lose interest in sex. Depression leads to an adverse effect on any activity that requires verve, spontaneity and good coordination, and that includes sex. In women, this diminished brain activity tends to be associated with lack of interest in sex and very often with difficulty in reaching orgasm.
REDUCED BLOOD FLOW
Diabetes and high blood pressure are among the health problems that can restrict genital blood flow, which makes the woman not to enjoy sex or lack sex drive.
THE ROLE OF AN INEXPERIENCE MAN
Most men are the cause of their woman’s inability to enjoy sex simply because they too are not creative in bed. It is a duty of every man to learn about sex. Every man must know and understand female sexuality. A man should know how to romance a woman give her a good foreplay that would naturally lubricate her vagina before proceeding to penetrate her. Sad enough some men do not know the essence of foreplay. They just pounce on a woman drag her to bed and proceed to penetrate her dry vagina. Some men do now know where the clitoris is in a woman and how to locate it and use it to give pleasure to the woman. Such men cannot make their woman enjoy sex especially where their woman is as ignorant as they are.
Taking care of daily responsibilities, managing both a career and family, sticking to a healthy diet – it is hard enough to put on a smile on your face, much less to get in the mood for sex. No wonder that so many women have problems with their libido or completely lose their interest in sex at some point of their lives.
And when it comes to getting back the lost libido, we have to admit: men have long been one step ahead. They have had access to male enhancement pills (such as ProSolution Pills) and erectile dysfunction drugs (such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra) for years now, whereas until recently women had no solutions to their sex life to turn to. However, nowadays men no longer have all the advantages. Drug companies and researchers have long raced to develop a libido enhancer that could be the answer to women’s sex life and there are already some pretty promising products on the market. Effective female enhancement products are no longer an illusion and now women can take advantage of these effective products and successfully enhance their libido.
TYPES OF LIBIDO ENHANCERS FOR WOMEN
There are various libido enhancers on the market, some very effective, and others rarely providing much benefit.
FEMALE VIAGRA-LIKE DRUGS
Banking on the success of Viagra, many drug companies focused on developing a drug that works in a similar way. Female Viagra-like drugs work by increasing blood flow to the female genitals. This results in improved vaginal lubrication and relaxed vaginal muscles. However, the loss of libido in women is not always due to vaginal dryness. In fact, Viagra-like pills can do nothing for those women who claim that they have lost their interest in sex or that sex provides no pleasure to them.
TESTOSTERONE PATCHES AND PILLS
Hormones, and particularly the male sex hormone testosterone, have been often suggested as a treatment for female sexual dysfunction. For women who have undergone hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) or oophorectomy (or ovariectomy – the surgical removal of an ovary or both ovaries), testosterone treatment has shown some benefits in improving women’s sexual function. However, using testosterone as a treatment for the loss of libido is controversial for a number of reasons. First, the level of testosterone is not the only factor (and not the only hormone) influencing women’s sex drive. Second, too much testosterone can cause many unwanted side effects, such as facial hair, spots, deepening of voice, male-pattern baldness, etc.
ESTROGEN PATCHES, PILLS AND GELS
Estrogen is also a hormone that is known to maintain vaginal lubrication, increase sexual sensation, and maintain interest in sex. It also helps to maintain vaginal tissue healthy. Estrogen therapy increases blood flow to the vagina and possibly helps to improve desire. However, just like testosterone therapy, the use of estrogen for libido enhancement is controversial and rarely with much benefit.
NATURAL LIBIDO ENHANCEMENT PILLS
Nowadays women can use herbal libido enhancers that are all-natural and completely safe. Quality libido enhancement pills have no side effects and can significantly improve female sex drive by taking one pill a day. The advantage of using such herbal tablets for libido enhancement is that they not only improve blood circulation to the genitals, thus enhancing body’s natural lubrication and intensifying sexual sensations, but also enhance women’s overall sexual desire.
NATURAL LIBIDO ENHANCEMENT TOPICAL CREAMS
Women who want to enhance their libido can also use topical creams that are clinically formulated for intimate application and designed to stimulate blood flow, alleviate vaginal dryness, and increase sexual response. If you decide to use such a product, choose a quality one that is pH balanced and water-based. The pH balance is needed to match normal body fluids and prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms. The use of water-based products is important since petroleum-based products can disrupt the normal vaginal environment.

Genevieve Nnaji has made her mark not only as one of the best faces in Nollywood but also as one of the most stylish actress. As an actress, she has remained consistent both in her craft and in her style. Genny as fondly called exudes sophistication and class which only a few actresses possess, and she has a great figure to compliment her alluring look.
Rita Dominic is also one of the Nigerian most talented actresses. A fierce Nollywood diva, she is good at interpreting her roles diligently. Apart from her acting prowess, her dress sense has kept her constantly in the news. Stunning, attractive and a powerful dresser, Rita has a unique dress sense that only a few could rival.
And over the years, these two actresses have remained on the top list of the best dressed actress in Nollywood. They turn heads on the red carpets any time and are darlings of the Paparazi. They have on several occasions been adjudged as best-dressed Nollywood actresses at different times through polls conducted by celebrity news/online tabloid. The competition between the two has remained fierce.
Recently, Gennny also added another award to her kit when she emerged “The most stylish lady in her 30s” at a classy event which took place in Lagos. And ever since she received the award, the question on most people’s mind is “Is Genny really the most stylish lady in her 30s.” While there are those who believe that Genny truly is the most stylish, there are those who feel that if any actress in Nollywood deserves such honor, it should be Rita.
To a lot of people, Genny has been able to maintain a gorgeous look year after year. She is more versatile and stylish, and her style can be described as modern with classic twist. She loves timeless essentials and is never afraid to take chances. She combines colors, textures and avoids getting stuck in the fashion rut. She has this soft and sensual look. She dresses her age and carries herself well. She also dresses to suit her body type and at most events she usually looks very classy. No doubt Genevieve has upped her game.
Rita Dominic on the other hand may be considered the queen of vogue. She wears the real labels, shops at world class boutiques like Selfridges, and loves designer labels like Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Christian Dior and others, which obviously cost a fortune. Rita is a red carpet delight anytime. Known for her hot and sexy hairstyles, Rita has created a signature look inspired from the retro style yet modern. She has her own style and not afraid to experiment. She loves to have fun with clothes, she takes risks with color combination and all that .Her style is fresh, fun and inspiring. She also pays attention to her skin and loves to flaunt her assets. She loves to show up looking classy at most A-class event she steps into.
No doubt, these two actresses has become a major force to reckon with as far as fashion is concerned in Nollywood. And since they both have admirable dress sense, the next question now should be who really rocks the red carpet better among these two ladies?
The late evening of April 14, 2011 will long be remembered at the night the Silverbird Galleria was blazed so brilliantly in a floodlit glory as movie and music stars and several other dignitaries gathered together for the premiere of the star studded movie ‘Bent Arrows’.
Stella Damacus, Genevieve, Omoni Oboli, The CEO of Stingomania, Mr Ope Banwo, Lancelot Imaseun the director of the movie, Desmond Elliot, Cobhams Asuquo, Chelsea Eze, Kene Mpakru are but few of the dignitaries that graced the ‘Bent Arrows’ premiere.
The event started with dapperly looking guests and celebrities bringing on poise and style on the red carpet while paparazzi and the press had a field day mingling with the stars and taking pictures.
The premiere proper began in a packed full hall with the introductions of the producer, director and some of the cast of the movie. The audience obviously captivated by the storyline of the movie was quiet for most of the movie except for some various interventions of claps and uproar of laughter. Once the movie ended guests were on their feet clapping and commending the producer for a job well done.
While we thought that was the end of the show for the night, Cobhams Asuquo who produced the independent soundtrack album for ‘Bent Arrows’ came on stage and treated the stars and guests a wonderful rendition of the soundtracks of the movie. Stella Damasus who also featured in the soundtrack album of ‘Bent Arrows’, took over the stage after Cobhams and gave a great performance that left the audience spellbound.
The event was wrapped up with the writer and producer of the film Isang, Ubong Awah giving a vote of thanks to everyone present and sating that the story of ‘Bent Arrows’ is a reality that stares at us everyday with a lot of our young girls going out there without the fear of God in their hearts.
Available in cinemas across the country from April 15, 2011, ‘Bent Arrows’ tells the story of three young ladies and their trials in the hands of men, parents and the society and how it affects their individual life. The movie brings to mind the ills of the society against women and the undue parental intervention in the lives of young women and the ills of sexual abuse on young women.
Couple of months back, the news of Bunmi Akinleye who was diagnosed with Cancer of the Bone Marrow broke as there were series of campaign from friends asking people to rally round her for financial support. The 29 year old lady is the Personal Assistant to popular Yoruba actress; Ronke Ojo fondly called Ronke Oshodi Oke. Following the closeness between the two, most people always think she is actually Ronke Oshodi Oke younger sister. Ronke also tried her best using her status in the society to solicit help to save her from dying.
Unfortunately, she lost her battle with the disease on Monday April 11, 2011. She died at University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she had been getting treatment.
Before her death, she went through a gruesome ordeal and fought a brave battle. The Bone Marrow Cancer has ravaged her upper body and left her right ankle with decayed tumor, exposed and untreated swollen sores that streams continuously of bodily fluids; discharges mucus and pores every second, due to lack of proper medical treatment. The fluids slowly build up to her upper shoulders and neck. She was practically depending on dosage of pains medications daily before she can sleep.
The genesis of her illness actually started 3 years ago when she felt a sharp pain in the left shoulder as she woke up in the morning. As a result of the pain she felt, she decided to follow it up medically. The hospital initially diagnosed her as fractured bone from the results of X-ray she did.
The next day, she was instructed to take the X-ray to Igbobi Orthopedic Hospital, Lagos where she was told that she needed an immediate surgery to correct the fractured bone. Few weeks after the surgery; she noticed a swelling and a constant excruciating pain. She returned to Igbobi hospital which also referred her to The Lagos University Teaching Hospital, for further possible treatment.
On getting to LUTH, she was told that the hospital does not have the medical equipment needed for her therapy, as such, it referred her to Eko Hospital: Eko in turn sent her back to Igbobi Orthopedics Hospital.
At Igbobi, the doctors threatened to amputate her arms as last solution to her illness, which she refused outrightly.
And since she couldn't get a solution to her health problem medically, and due to lack of sufficient funds to go overseas for proper treatment, she sought spiritual and faith healing through various churches: The churches told her it was a spiritual attack.
She carried the burden of pain and keeps praying for survival everyday. She fights on; hoping for a miracle. She also awaits sponsorship to help her get the right medical treatment so as to live peacefully and painlessly again.
She lived a pathetic life before breathing her last breath.

My Name is Samira Gomwalk, I am a Cancer survivor and this is my Story….
It was a morning like any other. I was getting ready for school and a commercial came on the radio asking women to do the ‘breast cancer self examination test’. I had heard of the test but wasn’t exactly sure how to do it the right way, so I subconsciously followed the instructions coming from my radio. I noticed a lump in my right breast but if I am honest I didn’t panic all that much. I was just curious to find out what the lump was. I made an appointment with the doctor just as a precaution. So you can imagine my shock horror when my doctor actually told me I had cancer! I couldn’t help thinking it was all a big joke! I was only 24, I thought to myself, what the heck would happen to me at 65 if I could get cancer this early! This was how my battle with cancer began.
Not only did I have to battle the disease that had the potential to kill me but I also had to battle the negative treatment I received from friends. I lost so much weight during that period it was difficult to explain the situation to anyone. Even when I did go to great lengths to explain, it was obvious that my efforts were useless. For some reason, some of my friends believed I was using breast cancer as a smoke screen to cover up my real ailment- HIV! That was especially hurtful- I had expected most of my friends to be a source of comfort and not malicious gossip. I felt eyes burning into my skin each time I attended lectures. School wasn’t fun for me. It was like a prison I was forced to attend. I had this sad look most of the time and just wanted to leave for home as soon as I arrived.
But thank God for my loving family, their love, support and understanding really did keep me going. I also did have a few trusted friends who supported me with love, prayers and helped me realize that life was still worth living regardless. But despite all the support they showed me it was sometimes difficult for me to see how much pain they were going through because of my ailment. I remember when after one of my visits to the doctor, my mom drove me to pick my little sister from school. That was the day we told her I had cancer. She immediately burst into tears. I felt so sad I didn’t know what to do. All I could do was pray for God to heal me.
Treatment for me began with chemotherapy which was given intravenously- it was awful…the weight loss, hair loss, depression! I hated the feeling of the drip trickling down which made me really sick. I could taste it in my mouth. I missed my once normal life because I was bedridden most of the time. At some point, I started seeing a psychiatrist. I thought I was running mad. Hearing the rumors from school that I was HIV positive really did kill me inside. I lost hope and gave up on life. I remember giving away my clothes because I had mentally given myself a private death sentence. I just kept thinking to myself that there was no way I would get out of my situation alive! I even lost touch with God at one point because I was angry with Him. I felt my sickness was unfair. I remember saying to Him once, Lord I don’t drink or smoke, how could you let this happen to me?’
After all these crazy thoughts finished floating in my head I started to see just how much love and support I was getting from my family. My step father was especially fantastic. I remember him telling me that he would do whatever it took to make sure I got the best treatment ever. I couldn’t let him down. I just couldn’t. I chose to fight for him and for the rest of my family. I became determined to fight and win the cancer battle not only for myself but for my family. Thankfully with God’s help and the love of my family, I was able to develop a positive outlook on life and my future. It gave me the courage to face the disease squarely always praying and thanking God for everything. I even took up playing tennis when ever I wasn’t in bed just so I could focus on other things. I remember back then I had lost my appetite and all I could eat was carrot, so everyone called me the carrot lady of the house. Now that I think back it does seem kind of funny. I am really thankful that God saw me through!
The next phase after chemotherapy was surgery. Initially my doctors suggested a mastectomy but I was fortunate enough to later on have a breast sparing mastectomy because of my age. The operation was done in South Africa. I remember those days in my hospital bed when I was really sick and it seemed like I was never going to leave there alive. One day I looked up to the heavens and I prayed to God that if He spared my life, I’d make sure I serve him and also start an initiative that would help other cancer sufferers. And God answered my prayers, because I recovered so fast and it was amazing. Even my doctors were surprised at how fast I recuperated.
After the surgery was radiotherapy. It wasn’t as painful as the forms of treatment I had already undergone. The only side effect I suffered was tiredness which compared with past treatments wasn’t bad at all.
Recovery: Is there life after cancer?
Yes, there is life after cancer. I am a survivor so I can say that. I received the ‘all clear’ sign from my doctor 9 months after my diagnosis. I was at the Montana hospital in Pretoria, South Africa. After a few x-rays and scans my doctor gave me the good news. I think it is impossible to explain the way I felt when he told me the good news, to say I was ecstatic was an understatement. One of the nurses even had tears in her eyes when she heard the news. She told me I was a lucky girl because she had lost her husband to breast cancer.
Although I’ve never really thought of a re-occurrence, even if the cancer does return, I won’t be deterred. I fought it once and believe I can fight it again. In my opinion one of the keys to beating cancer is possessing a strong and innate desire to live. The only way to do this is to think and live positively taking life one day at a time and at all times remembering that you can’t do it on your own, except you put God first.
This is the same advice I have for all cancer sufferers out there. Put God first in all that you do and He’ll surely see you through. Tough times will come but don’t give up because the devil only strikes back when you let him. Don’t ever let him win!
My promise to God
Life is too precious to be moping over spilled milk. Having had cancer has taught me to appreciate who I am and count myself to be one of the few lucky ones to still be alive. I view life from a totally different perspective now.
When I was lying on my hospital bed I made God a promise that if he spared me I would help other cancer sufferers. Today, I’m a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness and I teach people about how early detection can help save lives. A lot of people don’t know that the key to beating cancer lies in early detection, just like with me.
When I first discovered a lump in my breast, I went to the doctor thrice and was told it was nothing and that I shouldn’t worry. I persisted and my persistence paid because eventually they found out my tumor was malignant and was still at its earliest stages. I was lucky. If you feel something’s not right act fast! Your fast action might just save your life!
My battle with the disease initiated the birth of my baby ‘SAMIRA’ a Non Governmental Organisation which aims to create awareness on breast cancer because early detection is the key to surviving this disease. SAMIRA aims to source funds that would go a long way to help those affected by this disease through providing medication and financial assistance where needed. We also hope to have support groups for survivors and those living with the disease. We are already creating awareness with scheduled talks with youth groups around my vicinity and churches around.
During the Breast Cancer awareness month of October, SAMIRA organized a walk tagged the ‘SAMIRA Breast Cancer Awareness Walk’ in the city of Jos. It was a gathering with young people who came to help support this cause by walking the city of Jos with placards and our voices. It was awesome! This is just the beginning of many great things to happen. We are fighting breast cancer back. SAMIRA is an Arabic name meaning ‘something good’- what better way to give, even though the disease came to steal my joy but today ‘something good’ is coming out of it. I made it. You too can! Spread the word. Thank you Jesus!
