MTN FINALLY SUCCUMBS TO THE CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENT TREND

Nigeria’s telecoms company MTN seems to have caught the bug of celebrity endorsement. In the past, MTN has been known for making use of non-celebrity models to run its campaigns, unlike its other competitors who seem to endorse celebrities by the dozen.

Bebeakinboade.com gathered that MTN decided to go this way because most celebs may get involved in one scandal or another, and MTN would not want their customers to associate the scandal with their brand.  It was not until last year that it looked like MTN has finally decided to break this rule, when Davido was used for the MTN pulse brand. Then followed the likes of Yaw, Mama G and Osofia.

Now with competition among the telecoms getting stiffer, no thanks to the portability scheme, the telecom giant decided to go a step further by signing past winners of its sponsored music-talent-hunt-reality-show, MTN project fame West Africa. Pop singer Iyanya; soul singer, Praiz; R&B vocalists, Chidinma; and Mike Anyasodo (iMike).

This is a huge step for MTN, even though all of these acts are still in the budding category as none of them can be categorized as fully fledged A-listers.
