Embattled President of FIFA, Mr. Sepp Blatter has resigned over the bribery scandal rocking the soccer body. Blatter has called for fresh elections to elect a new President. Blatter, who was re-elected for a fifth term last week, has called for an emergency FIFA congress to be held as soon as possible.

Speaking at an emergency press conference hastily organised in Zurich, FIFA’s headquarters, he said, “I felt compelled to stand for re-election, as I believed that this was the best thing for the organization. That election is over, but FIFA’s challenges are not. FIFA needs a profound overhaul…

“While I have a mandate from the membership of FIFA, I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football — the fans, the players, the clubs, the people who live, breathe and love football as much as we all do at FIFA.

“I will organise an extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president.”
