MEGHAN AND HARRY VS. BUCKINGHAM PALACE: HERE IS WHY THEY ARE AT WAR
The cheerfulness on this picture above, taken after Archie’s birth, is long gone. It was 2019 and Meghan and Harry’s first child had brought light to the palace. By 2021, the couple is on the other side of the ocean, definitively breaking their ties with the British Royal House, and accusations back and forth are piling up. The latest is directed towards Meghan Markle. She’s being accused of the bullying palace staff.
MEGHAN MARKLE ACCUSED OF BULLYING
The news of the bullying accusation appeared in The Times. It describes how (allegedly) Meghan Markle subjected the staff in her service at Kensington Palace to bullying. Markle had moved into the palace in 2018 after marrying Harry. The Times speaks of continued harassment by the Duchess of several employees.
A COMPLAINT AND TWO RESIGNATIONS OF STAFF
The Times reports that there was an official complaint from the staff against Meghan Markle. Two people had resigned because they could not stand her demeanour, and another had said she felt “humiliated.”

HARRY ‘ASKED GOVERNMENT NOT TO INVESTIGATE’
According to The Times, the complaint reached the British government, whereupon Harry approached them and requested they defer an investigation and let the matter go. All this, of course, was hidden from the public at the time. They only received tender images of Meghan and Harry in Kensington.
CONTROVERSIAL EARRINGS AND OTHER MEGHAN MARKLE BLUNDERS
The Times adds that, allegedly, Meghan Markle’s conduct was improper in other respects. In October 2018, she made a public appearance wearing earrings that had been gifted to the Royal Family by Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The prince had been – and still is – accused of having journalist Jamal Khashoggi murdered.
WAS THIS REALLY MEGHAN’S OWN BLUNDER?
According to the Times, Meghan was aware of the potential controversy, and for that reason, she allegedly asked her communication team to lie about the earrings and say they were not a gift but a loan. Critics of the story say that it’s impossible for Meghan Markle to have had such power to decide about jewellery because it is a strict protocol involving the staff who curate the royal jewel room.
STRONG DENIAL FROM MEGHAN AND HARRY: IT’S ALL A “CALCULATED CAMPAIGN”
From California, Meghan and Harry have responded with a harsh statement in which they speak of a “calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation.” They also accuse the press, as they have done before, saying they are “disappointed that the media give credibility to this defamatory portrait of the Duchess of Sussex.”

ROYAL STAFF MADE A PREEMPTIVE STRIKE BEFORE OPRAH WINFREY’S INTERVIEW
The statement implies that the publication in The Times is a deliberate leak from Buckingham Palace, shortly before Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey on March 7.
“MY BIGGEST FEAR WAS THAT HISTORY WOULD REPEAT ITSELF,” HARRY TELLS OPRAH
In the interview (highlighted in a CBS preview), Harry looks back at his life with Meghan within the British Royal Family. “My greatest fear was that history would repeat itself,” he said, referring to the tragedy of his mother, Lady Di. She was unhappy in her marriage and miserable in a palace environment that she considered oppressive.

According to some chroniclers, William feels betrayed by his brother, who has chosen this critical moment to announce that he is leaving all his duties as prince.
MEGHAN MARKLE: IMPOSSIBLE TO INTEGRATE INTO THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY
Meghan Markle was not made for the life of a princess. She never adapted to the rules of the Royal Family. Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand argue in the book ‘Finding Freedom’ that Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle had an impossible relationship, despite their smiles on the photos.
KATE MIDDLETON: CLASSISM?
The book argues that Kate Middleton always felt that Meghan came from a different planet; perhaps because of classism. Either way, Scobie and Durand say, the Duchess of Cambridge never bothered to establish even a minimal friendship with Meghan.
THE DAY KATE AND MEGHAN WENT SHOPPING
The book mentions one particular example of how Kate Middleton snubbed Meghan Markle. One day, allegedly, both princesses planned to go shopping at the same store. Meghan thought they would go together, but Kate took her car and went on her own, leaving Meghan alone and surprised.
A DIFFICULT LIFE IN THE PALACE
Ever since Meghan and Harry went to California, they’ve dropped hints that life in the palace was impossible for them. Some media have suggested that Prince William tried to improve the atmosphere, and that he wanted Harry by his side. But it was not to be. Meghan and Harry moved to California and left their royal duties behind.
A BREAK BETWEEN BROTHERS
It’s a painful break between two brothers. William and Harry had been very close during their childhood and youth. The loss of his mother strengthened their bond. But the complexity of life in adulthood has broken it.
DIFFERENT WORLDVIEWS
The distance between William and Harry is that between someone who decided to assume the weight of the crown and another who chose to lead an entirely different, free life.

This irritates Buckingham Palace. “You can’t be a prince and participate in a Netflix series,” they argue, referring to the TV deals Harry and Meghan are supposedly making for future projects with the streaming platform.

And then there is the battle between Meghan and Harry on the one hand, and the British press on the other. The other royals have mostly put up with the excesses of the tabloids, but Meghan and Harry do not accept any of it. They have several lawsuits ongoing and seek thousands of pounds in damages plus frontpage rectifications.
MEGHAN AND HARRY’S REPUTATION IN BRITAIN
With all these demands and suits the British press has not considered Meghan and Harry among its favourites. The abundance of negative headlines and their escape to the United States have deteriorated the image of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the British media.
DETHRONED PRINCES
Metaphorically speaking (although in a way concretely as well), Meghan and Harry are like dethroned princes at the moment.
HARRY HASN’T VISITED HIS GRANDFATHER IN THE HOSPITAL
So far, Prince Harry has not visited his grandfather Philip in the hospital. The 99-year-old Duke of Edinburgh is recovering from serious heart surgery and has the royal family worried British media report. It is not clear why Harry hasn’t seen his grandfather yet.
AN UNPLEASANT SURPRISE FOR QUEEN ELIZABETH
The relationship between Elizabeth and her grandson has also soured significantly. When Harry decided to move to the U.S., they had a long talk in which the queen told him she preferred to keep him close. However, it was his life, she conceded.
HE HADN’T TOLD HER ABOUT OPRAH INTERVIEW
Now, a year later, Queen Elizabeth has been deeply hurt by the news about the Oprah Winfrey interview. Not only because such an interview is usually not done by British royals, but also because she had to hear about it from the press – even though she had just had a telephone conversation with her grandson, who had said nothing about it.
AN ALL-OUT WAR BETWEEN BUCKINGHAM AND MEGAN AND HARRY
Overall, it appears that there’s an all-out war between the Palace and the Americanized couple. Buckingham Palace is not hiding it anymore; it wants the public to know its own version of the story as well as Meghan and Harry’s. For now, it’s up to Prince William whether he is prepared to confront his brother out in the open. It remains to be seen.
