Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja was transformed into a beauty salon recently, when braiding stylists, fashionistas and trend setters came together to witness the first ever braiding competition held in Nigeria. The competition was organized by Japanese fiber company, Kanekalon, in conjunction with STB McCann. It was the prelimnary competition for the Lagos zones.

THE NAIJA BRAIDS PARADE
In order to promote to promote the use of products with 100% Kanekalon , Kaneka corporation has organized a competition to bring out braiding skills and creativity in Nigerian hairstylists. This year, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Nigeria independence anniversary, KANEKA has decided to hold the NAIJA BRAIDS PARADE which embraces braiding, a style that celebrates and embraces the original African Beauty of Nigerian women.
The national event is scheduled to hold in 4 regions, Lagos, Enugu, Abuja and Port Hacourt with the final competition in Lagos, which is expected among others to draw the crème de la crème in the hair, beauty and fashion industry. Two winners for each of the four regions shall contest in the final event.

LEPACIOUS BOSE AND KOFFI COMPERED THE EVENT
To kick off this grand event, the first zonal prelimnary competition took place at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja. The events attracted the stake holders in the fashion and beauty industry who came to witness the competition between the 12 finalists from Lagos, as they battled for the tickets for the grand finale of the competition taking place in September. The event was compered by 2 talented comedians, Bose Ogunboye popularly known as Lepacious Bose and Koffi Idowu popularly known as Koffi. They are both major forces to reckon with in this terrain. They gave the event another twist as they eased the tensions of the finalists with their jokes as well as entertaining the guests too.

MEET THE CONTESTANTS
There were 12 contestants that braided their way to fame within a two hour frame. The contestants include Ufuo Awele of Ace Touch Hair and Make over Salon, Mayowa Olatunji of Mayo beauty salon, Mrs Lois Oti of Divine Favour Salon, Adenike Olajumaye of Niktin hair dressing salon, Mrs Mariama Diallo of Mia Salon de stars, Mary Idahosa of Remarkable Touch Salon, Modupe Afolabi of Dupsy hair salon, Tayo Satuoye of Tayo hairdressing salon, Ikechukwu Macaulay Sylvester of I Kid ‘n’ Style, Evelyn Okoso of Salon de Eve, Bristol Hair Care beauty salon and Princess Beauty Salon.

AND THE PANEL OF JUDGES.
The panel of judges comprised of trendsetters in the world of fashion . The judges include Susan Eyo Honesty( City People Deputy Editor in Chief), Chidi Anaba (Downtown Salon), Grace Akason(CEO of Sequence hair and beauty salon) and Bolaji Akindinlehin ( MD of Finesse Beauty Salon and Cosmetology School).
At the end of the day, the judges came up with two winners, Mariama Diallo of Mia Salon de stars and Evelyn Okoso of Salon de Eve. The judges based their decision on how the hair stylists handled the clients (that is, the level of comfort the clients had while the hair was being braided), their creativity and uniqueness, the neatness and professionalism of the stylists and what they had in mind when braiding the hair. The 2 finalists will represent Lagos at the grand finale with the other winners that will also emerge from the Regional competition from Abuja, Enugu and Port Hacourt.

THOSE WHO SUPPORTED THE EVENT
The Naija Braid Parade is been put together by Kanekalon. It is also supported by some of the leading high company in the country. These include Ayman Enterprises Ltd (producers of Darling and Amigos), Linda Manufacturing Company Ltd (manufacturers of Xpression) and Venus- Nina Company Ltd (makers of Nina). Kanekalon Company makes the world’s finest fiber that creates beautiful attachments for weaving and braids. In other words, most manufacturers of attachments products in Nigeria use Kanekalon as their raw material, and that might explain why these 3 top hair companies in Nigeria all came out in full force to support the Kanekalon ideas.
