TOP FERTILITY TIPS

Spread the love

Whether you’re attending a
fertility clinic, undergoing IVF or just starting out and trying to conceive,
we’ve got the expert fertility advice you need.
Dr Marilyn Glenville  (www.marilynglenville.com), author
of Getting Pregnant Faster, shares her top fertility tips
on everything from nutrition to lifestyle factors.
EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
Although it goes without saying that a healthy diet is
crucial to a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby, many people are unaware
of the fact that diet can help to correct hormone imbalances that may affect
your ability to conceive. Try to include plenty of fruit and vegetables daily.

GET YOUR WHOLE GRAINS

Make sure you’re getting enough complex carbohydrates –
wholegrains like brown rice, oats and wholemeal bread are great. You should also
increase your intake of fibre.’

EAT OILY FISH

Oily foods such as fish, nuts, seeds and oils are key for
optimum fertility nutrition.Go organic wherever possible.

AVOID SUGAR

Avoid sugar, both on its own and hidden in food for the best
chance of conceiving.Yes, that means chocolate too.
SAY NO TO ‘BAD’ FATS
Reduce your intake of saturated fats from dairy products and watch out for
trans fats in processed food: Just small increases in the consumption of trans
fats can double the risk of you not ovulating.

WAVE GOODBYE TO WINE
Alcohol will affect both you and your partner .In fact,
drinking any alcohol at all can reduce your fertility by half – and the more
you drink, the less likely you are to conceive. Research has shown that
drinking alcohol also causes a decrease in male sperm count.
CUT DOWN ON COFFEE
Having four cups of coffee or any caffeinated drink a day
makes it 26% less likely that you will conceive, and caffeine can affect sperm
health.
STEER CLEAR OF SWEETNER
Avoid additives, preservatives and chemicals, such as
artificial sweeteners to get your body baby ready.

HAVE SEX…MORE

To maximise your chances of pregnancy you should enjoy as
much sex as possible, at least two times a week. The best and fittest sperm
reach the fallopian tube in five minutes and the rest usually get there within
45 minutes. So as long as you don’t leap up or go to the toilet the moment you
are finished, you should be fine.

DETOX YOUR BATHROOM CABINET

Be careful when choosing make-up and moisturisers as
chemicals can get into your skin and be absorbed into the bloodstream. Many
products contain detergents and artificial fragrances that can be irritating to
sensitive areas,’ – so read the label!

STOCK UP ON KEY SUPPLEMENTS

‘As well as looking at what you eat and drink there is a lot
of evidence that shows some nutritional supplements boost fertility. The
important nutrients for fertility are zinc, folic acid, selenium, vitamin E,
Omega 3 fatty acids for you and your partner plus two amino acids, arginine and
carnitine for boosting male fertility – all available from good health food
shops.

GET YOUR VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is also key. It contains antioxidants have been shown
to significantly reduce age-related ovulation decline and has been proven to
have beneficial effects for couples undergoing fertility treatment.

DAILY DOSE OF VITAMIN D

Vitamin D helps to balance your immune system – important in
getting and staying pregnant – and is also important for male fertility as low
levels of this nutrient is associated with low sperm motility and more abnormal
forms.’ You can get your Vitamin D levels checked with a simple home test –

LOOK AFTER YOUR EGGS

Three months is the magic number to change the quality of
your eggs,’ says Marilyn. ‘It takes that long for the follicles on your ovaries
to develop before one is mature enough to release an egg at ovulation.’Most
women are born with about two million egg follicles; by puberty there are about
750,000, and by the age of around 45, as few as 10,000 may be left. So although
you cannot change the number of eggs you have, you can change their
quality. And by improving the quality of your eggs, you are increasing your
chances of conceiving.
AVOID HOT BATHS
It’s important that your partner makes changes too.Men
should avoid hot baths and tight underpants as sperm production takes place at
32°C (89°F) – lower than the body temperature at 37°C (98.4°F). A rise of 1°C
can decrease fertility by 40%.’  So turn the cold tap on!

STOP SMOKING
If you smoke, stop. You are twice as likely to get pregnant
if you don’t smoke. Stopping smoking is just as important for your partner as
it is for you. Smoking can also affect the sperm count and the chemicals in
tobacco smoke can damage the DNA in sperm which make it harder to
conceive.

EASY ON THE EXERCISE

It is not only being the right body weight that’s critical
for fertility, the amount of body fat you have is important too.In normal
women, fat comprises about 28% of body weight. If it drops below 22%, ovulation
can stop. Women with an average or above average body weight, or who exercise
very rigorously, may have a lower body fat and a higher muscle content, which
may lead to their periods becoming irregular or stopping altogether. Sensible
advice for these women would be to reduce their exercise until their body fat
returns to the normal range. Many gyms have simple devices that can check your
body fat level or you can buy a fat percentage machine.

MAKING CHANGES

Making these changes requires an effort on both
partners’ sides but modifying your lifestyle modification can make a huge
difference in assisting couples to conceive naturally or optimising their
chances of conception with fertility treatment or IVF.’
