Evans Atta Mills indeed took all by a bitter sadness. He died on. Tuesday, June 24, 2012 after a after
a prolonged battle with throat cancer. Mills died in a hospital in the capital Accra
while receiving treatment.
The 68-year-old Mills, who oversaw the start of large-scale oil production in Ghana
in December 2010, had recently traveled to the United
States for a medical check-up.
In accordance with Ghana’s
constitution, Vice President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as president
before an emergency session of parliament, pledging to maintain stability as he
serves out the remainder of Mills’ term.
“I wish Ghanaians to be assured that all is well,” the 53-year-old
who has also served as communications minister and recently published a memoir
said. “We are going to maintain the peace, unity and stability that Ghana
is noted for.”
He declared a week of national mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast.
Various international bodies, world leaders, organizations, civil society
groups and institutions have expressed their deepest condolences and sympathies
to the immediate family of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, the people
of Ghana and
the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

US PRESIDENT, OBAMA PAYS TRIBUTE TO PRESIDENT ATTA MILLS
Condolences poured in for the late leader, including from US President Barack
Obama who chose Ghana for his first visit to sub-Saharan Africa as president in
2009.
“President Mills tirelessly worked to improve the lives of the Ghanaian
people,” Obama said in a statement.
“He helped promote economic growth in Ghana
in the midst of challenging global circumstances and strengthened Ghana’s
strong tradition of democracy.”
“I will always remember my trip to Ghana
in 2009, and the hospitality that President Mills and the people of Ghana
showed to me, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and our entire delegation. I was also
pleased to host President Mills in the Oval Office earlier this year”.
Under his leadership, the United States
and Ghana
deepened our partnership in the promotion of good governance and economic
development. He was also a strong advocate for human rights and for the fair
treatment of all Ghanaians.
On behalf of the American people, I would like to offer my deepest condolences
to the people of Ghana, and reaffirm the deep and enduring bonds between our
democracies that President Mills helped to strengthen
NIGERIAN PRESIDENT, GOODLUCK JONATHAN MOURNS ATTA MILLS
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has received with shock and immense sadness
news of the sudden death of President John Atta Mills of Ghana.
On behalf of himself, the government and people of Nigeria,
President Jonathan extends sincere condolences to late President Mill’s family
as well as the government and people of Ghana.
The President assures the people of Ghana
of the sympathy and solidarity of the people of Nigeria
as they mourn late President Mills who did his best during his tenure to carry
forward the process of democratic consolidation and socio-economic development
in Ghana.
He prays that God Almighty will grant the late President’s soul eternal rest
and bless his successor with the fortitude and wisdom he will need to keep Ghana
firmly on the path of peace, stability and progress.
It is President Jonathan’s hope and expectation that the excellent relationship
which existed between Nigeria
and Ghana
during President Mill’s tenure will continue to be strengthened under the new
leadership in Ghana
in the mutual interest of both countries.
DAVID CAMERON PAYS TRIBUTE TO LATE GHANAIAN PRESIDENT
Prime Minister David Cameron said he was deeply saddened to hear about the
death of Ghanaian president John Atta Mills.
On Tuesday, Cameron paid tribute to the politician, describing him as a
“tireless defender of democracy in West Africa and
across the continent, and he will be greatly missed”.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family, and all the
Ghanaian people on this difficult day.”
GHANAIAN PLAYERS PAY TRIBUTE TO PRESIDENT MILLS
Ghanaian players abroad have paid tribute to the country’s president John Evans
Atta Mills, who died on Tuesday, on micro-blogging website Twitter.
Most senior internationals reacted with shock when news of his demise was
announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Marseille star Andre Ayew, who met the late president after leading Ghana’s
Under-20 to win Africa’s first FIFA Under-20 World Cup
in 2009, expressed his condolence.
He posted on his official page: “All my regards and my support to his family
and to the Ghanaian people. RIP our president. It’s a sad day and it’s with a
deep emotion that I learned the death of our President mister John Atta Mills.”
New Juventus signing Kwadwo Asamoah also responded by saying: “Got news that Ghana
President John Atta Mills has died. Really nice man everytime I met him. RIP”
Would-be Ghana international Emmanuel Frimpong ?also added: “Just Heard the Ghana
President John Atta Mills Just Died…. May your soul Rest In Peace.”
Udinese midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu also joined in by writing: “RIP Atta
Mills President Of Ghana. Nice man who will be missed.”
KENYAN PRESIDENT, MWAI MOURNS MILLS
President Mwai Kibaki has sent a message of condolence to the Government and
people of the Republic of Ghana
following the death of President John Atta Mills.
President Kibaki described the death as untimely, terming the late President as
one of the greatest sons of Africa.
The President noted that the late Prof. Mills was not only an excellent
statesman but also a renowned scholar who was well grounded in the field of
law.
He said President Mills will particularly be remembered for entrenching
democracy and political stability in Ghana,
noting that President Mills had led his country through great economic strides.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Kenya,
and on my own behalf, I express our deepest sorrow following the sad demise of
President Atta Mills,” President Kibaki said.
Expressing Kenyans sympathy and solidarity with Ghana
during this difficult time of mourning, the President prayed to God to give the
people of Ghana
the strength and fortitude to bear the tragic loss.
FACEBOOK, TWITTER USERS MOURN LATE PRESIDENT MILLS
As the news filtered in, social network notably facebook and twitter were
buzzing with updates and tweets with people initially seeking confirmation of
the sad news.
When the Chief of Staff, Henry Martey Newmann confirmed the news via press
statement released, radio stations broadcast and within seconds the news has
went viral.
Facebook users could not hide their grief as they poured in their hearts for
President Mills, who was affectionately referred to as Asomdwehene.
As the news sunk down, it became clear everyone was in disbelief and in a state
of denial, wishing it was just a bad dream.
